To understand the matter of why Korea was divided, we first should know the relationship between America, England and Russia.
In the 1880s, Russia was the biggest rival of England.
By the time the British Empire took over one-fourth of the world's land, and Russia was also spreading to the south (toward Korea).
Because, as you know, Russia is a very cold country, so they wanted to have a port which does not freeze.
So Russia wanted to colonize Korea.
